LOCAL earthmoving concern — The Big Rock Logistics — has pledged US$10 000 for programmes that are aimed at fighting drug abuse in Mutare.
After being riled by chaotic scenes that rocked a recent musical show in Mutare, which is widely believed to have been a sponsored act of violence by sloshed youths, The Big Rock Logistics proprietor, Mr Blessing Mangwiro told a Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services golf tournament gathering that he is taking it up upon himself to fight drug abuse.
Mr Mangwiro’s pledge dovetails with Government’s commitment to fight drugs and substance abuse.
The Second Republic recently availed $500 million under the drugs and substance abuse mitigation fund to fight the scourge.
Mr Mangwiro, who was one of the major local partners of the aborted musical show where South African singer Makhadzi was whisked off the stage prematurely after chaos erupted, took a swipe at businessmen and politicians who are allegedly financing the acquisition of drugs for youths.
“It is sad some of our youths’ addictions are being fuelled by prominent businessmen who pay them to disrupt public gatherings and destabilise events in our community.
“This is not right and should come to an end. I will be heavily involved in fighting this anomaly,” said Mr Mangwiro.
“I am pledging US$10 000 that will go towards the drug abuse fight and we have to come up with programmes, through the ZPCS and the Commissioner General’s charity programme initiative, that will promote a drug free society,” he said.
Speaking at the same event, ZPCS Commissioner General Moses Chihobvu said those found abusing drugs will be dismissed from the institution.
Commissioner General Chihobvu said drug abuse has become rampant among ZPCS officers, adding that this is a cause for concern.
“The issue of drug and substance abuse is not only a cause for concern to offenders who would have been brought to our prisons, but even my officers have joined the bandwagon. We have a serious challenge with drugs in our society,” he said.
The wave of drugs and substance abuse seem to be intensifying across the country as school going children, the youths and even adults are drawn into the web.
Those abusing the drugs are mostly drawn to crystal meth, also known as guka makafela or dombo, skunk, illicit brews such as kamutonono, as well as the recently introduced strawberry quick sweets.
