US$10 000 robbery: Suspect denied bail

Herald Reporter

A man accused of recently robbing an 80-year-old Kadoma woman of US$10 000 will remain in custody until his trial after the High Court rejected his bail application.

Witness Tamisayi was placed on remand after he and four accomplices allegedly robbed the octogenarian at her residence.

The suspected robbers allegedly entered the house clad in military uniforms and using a bogus search warrant and pretended that they were searching for weapons of war.

Tamisayi applied for bail at the High Court early this month and on Monday, Justice Davison Foroma rejected his bail plea after finding that the prosecution’s case was too strong and this could induce him to skip bail.

The court opined that the prosecution’s evidence was not merely that of implication but also based on indications by the complainants even though Tamayisa disputed the indications.

Justice Foroma said the risk of Tamisayi absconding if released on bail was a compelling reality.

“Applicant (Tamisayi) risks a conviction followed by a substantial sentence of imprisonment which provides an incentive to abscond,” said Justice Foroma.

“In the circumstances the court finds that applicant is a flight risk. Therefore, the applicant is not a proper candidate for bail and his application is accordingly dismissed.”

Tamisayi was arrested in connection with the offence after he was implicated by another robbery suspect Zephania Munyuki.

It is alleged that Tamisayi and his accomplices broke into the complaint’s premises pretending to be searching for weapons of war. They allegedly showed the complainant a search warrant to confirm their purpose at the house.

While at the premises, the gang allegedly disarmed complainant’s guard who had a revolver, which they immediately used to threaten the complainant and her family.

They allegedly tied them and locked them in a toilet before taking cellphones, US$10 000 and R20 000 before speeding off in the complainant’s vehicle which they dumped in Chegutu.
