A CHIPINGE man betrayed the trust bestowed upon him by a co-tenant and tried to rape a 17-year-old girl who had been left in his custody.

Gladman Chirayeraye (51) of Gaza Township last week on Thursday appeared before Chipinge magistrate, Mr Alfred Chinembiri, facing indecent assault charges as defined in Section 67(1) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act.

He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to six months imprisonment.

However, three months were set aside for five years on condition of good behaviour.

The remaining three months were further suspended on condition that Chirayeraye pays a fine of US$150.

Prosecuting, Mr Timothy Katsande, said on February 12, Chirayeraye and the complainant were at home as her mother had gone to church with his wife.

“Chirayeraye invited the complainant to the dining room and asked her about her ‘O’ Level results. He proposed love to the complainant, but she turned him down,” said Mr Katsande.

Chirayeraye dragged the complainant towards his bedroom while fondling her.

The complainant wrestled with Chirayeraye and managed to escape.

She dashed to her mother’s bedroom and locked herself inside.

The following morning, the complainant told her mother what had happened during her absence.

The complainant’s mother confronted Chirayeraye.

He offered the complainant’s mother US$20 and 100 rand in an effort to buy her silence.

“The complainant’s mother received the money, but she proceeded to file a police report against Chirayeraye, thereby leading to his arrest,” said Mr Katsande.
