US$1,5m to upgrade infrastructure

obsolete sewer infrastructure in the town.
In an interview on Tuesday, acting town clerk Mr Abel Gotora said the money was disbursed early this month and work is expected to commence in early October.
“We have already floated tenders for the contractors to embark on the upgrading of our sewer treatment plants,” he said.
Mr Gotora said they would repair five sewer plants at Chinhoyi Hospital, Hunyani, Matura, Finley and Chaedza which have not been working for years resulting in raw waste being discharged into Manyame River consequently drawing punishment from the Environmental Management Agency.
Chinhoyi is currently sitting on more than US$40 000 in fines from the environment watchdog for discharging raw effluent into water bodies.
He said money raised from fines would never be recovered and the funds from Government will help in avoiding clashes with the environmental watchdog.

“This is a welcome development that will ensure that we honour our obligation to the environment and our community by not discharging raw waste into our rivers,” he said.
Part of the money will go towards replacement of pipes in Hunyani and Ruvimbo suburbs.
Some of the money could have gone towards improving pumping capacity to ensure all parts of the town get running water but addressing the sewer problem in the town needed urgent attention.
The municipality, Mr Gotora said, would have to wait for the delivery of some of the parts that are not locally available and orders take time to be processed.
