PLANS to establish a massive 150 megawatt (MW) solar plant in Marondera have moved a gear up following a strategic partnership between De Green Rhino Energy and a United Kingdom-based organisation, Green Power.

The partnership will see an investment of US$160 million being availed for the establishment of the biggest solar plant at Rufaro Farm in Marondera.

The investment is a direct response to President Mnangagwa’s friendly investor policies, which have resulted in massive investments in all sectors of the economy.

While the mobilisation stage has started, actual construction works will start in the first quarter of next year, and the whole project is expected to be completed in 2027.

Mr Francis Gogwe and Mr Jordan Assassa

Addressing the media in Marondera today, Green Power’s chief executive, Mr Jordan Assassa, said the project is expected to benefit more than 250 000 households.

“We are here to celebrate the 150-megawatt solar project in Zimbabwe and will be working with my local partner, Mr Francis Gogwe,” he said.

“I am excited about this project, which will benefit over 250 000 homes. We will bring green energy to local schools and hospitals.

“We are bringing US$160 million investment into Zimbabwe. This project is critical in that it will show all foreign investors that Zimbabwe is now in a new era and is friendly to investors. “

De Green Rhino Energy general manager, Mr Francis Gogwe, said they are excited to be embarking on this massive project.

“We are happy to be partnering with Green Power, an experienced project developer. We will create jobs for the people. About 500 jobs will be created, especially during the construction phase,” he said.

“There will be fantastic job opportunities. The project is going forward, and we are pleased about it.”

Zimbabwe is experiencing a significant surge in solar energy investments, which are expected to bring relief to the national energy deficit.
