A SPOT fine of US$30 has been put in place for Bulawayo residents found flouting a number of public nuisance by-laws that include littering, cooking on the streets and public urinating.
This was revealed by the local authority’s corporate communications manager, Mrs Nesisa Mpofu, who said the local authority would take advantage of the Spring Cleaning exercise, which begins today, to educate the public on the city’s by-laws. The Spring Cleaning campaign will run from today till Saturday. Mrs Mpofu noted that the aim of the programme was to clean up the City of Bulawayo and help restore it to its former glory.

The council spokesperson revealed that the local authority will start enforcing the US$30 spot fine for various violations of council by-laws inclusive of littering.
“Residents are encouraged to observe the city’s by-laws and desist from; vending of both food stuffs and non-food stuffs on the streets without a license, littering or illegal dumping in any parts of the city, public urination, car-washing in city parking lots, cooking on the streets of the city, selling, delivering or otherwise dealing fresh or frozen meat on the streets of the city and open worship or unauthorised gatherings in any parts of the city. Anyone found to be in violation of the city by-laws by the responsible authorities is liable to a spot fine of US$30,” said Mrs Mpofu.

In April the local authority endorsed an anti-littering policy, which saw a strict enforcement of anti-littering by laws among other interventions.
