Government requires at least US$3million to feed villagers resettled at Nuanetsi Ranch until May next year when they harvest their crops, Masvingo Minister of State for Provincial Affairs, Kudakwashe Bhasikiti has said.Speaking during a handover of sanitary wear, clothes and groceries by the Zimbabwe Human Rights Association last week, Minister Bhasikiti said the families consume 156 tonnes of maize-meal monthly.
“As Government we are feeding the families with 156 tonnes of mealie-meal every month, among other commodities such as cooking oil and beans for relish.
“We continue to receive and give until they stand again on their feet on the permanent settlement. The food support requires US$276 000 per month on mealie-meal and we are working with over US$300 000 in terms of feeding them monthly. Government is still assisting the families until end of next year in May when we expect them to harvest the first crop after the rain seasons.
“We received maize from GMB depots, which will be used to feed the people but we are open to those who are willing to support and contribute in additional food and support on irrigation projects,” said Minister Bhasikiti. He said Government established an examination centre at in Nuanesti Ranch which will cater for Grade 7, Ordinary and Advanced Level pupils.
“Students writing examinations this year will converge at the established examination centre and we have secured good storage facilities to keep the material very safe at the site.” Minister Bhasikiti thanked ZimRights for the donation.
ZimRights national director Mr Okay Machisa said Zimbabweans should share challenges and difficulties when the situation arises. “We are Zimbabweans together and we should share our challenges and difficulties. Every Zimbabwean is a philanthropist in their own right and it is important to avail all forms of assistance to the people who are needy,” he said.
