TWO men have been dragged before the courts after allegedly swiping US$58 417 from the National Building Society (NBS).
According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), Smith Mativenga Chigwawa (45), a bank cash deposit teller, teamed up with Stalin Rundora (30), a security guard at Atharvan Investment (Pvt) Ltd, in a daring inside job.
“Between the 5th and the 10th of September 2025, the duo, in pursuance of their plan, withdrew cash amounting to US$58 417 from Atharvan Investment’s NBS account and converted it to their own use,” read the NPAZ statement.
The scam came to light when Michael Smoko, NBS Security Manager, spotted suspicious transactions and contacted Atharvan Investment. The company confirmed it had not received any cash, triggering a full-scale investigation.
On 21 September, detectives from the CID Commercial Crimes Division moved in, grilling the suspects until Chigwawa finally cracked.
He later surrendered US$51 420 in stolen cash to the bank.
“The accused persons were subsequently arrested. Of the US$58 417 stolen, US$6 997 was not recovered while US$51 420 was recovered,” the statement read.
The two men have been remanded in custody until 23 October 2025 as investigations continue.
