Construction has already begun and the first occupants are expected to move in by September.
Water and sewer pipes are being laid while building materials have been bought in bulk.
People were allocated 180 to 200 square metre stands on which they will be assisted to build one-roomed structures, which they will extend into four and five roomed houses.
The beneficiaries are already on site and are staying in makeshift structures, which are served with eco-san toilets with a capacity to separate solid waste from urine.
Mayor Muchadeyi Masunda launched the project. He commended the beneficiaries for assisting with labour. He said funding for the project, which was initially meant for the refurbishment of Mbare Hostels and construction of town houses at Tsiga in Mbare, was sourced from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
“This is my most exciting development in the four years I have been mayor,” he said.
He said after the completion of the Dzivaresekwa scheme, the city would go back to proceed with the construction of townhouses at Tsiga in Mbare.
