“One of the accused grabbed the complainant and dragged him into the house. Another one produced a spanner and they started assaulting the wife, demanding cash from the couple.”
Insp Sabau said the couple surrendered US$3 250, jewellery, two C63 Nokia cellphones, all valued at US$7 000.
“After getting the money and property, the robbers went away through the main door,” he said.
He said the police were worried with the increase in cases of robberies in residential areas.
“We are concerned with such cases that happen especially in low density areas where criminals armed with knives and spanners are storming houses and robbing residents of property,” he said. “They either hoot and take advantage when the gates are opened for them or in some cases they jump over fences and precastwalls. Some of the complainants are held hostage by the robbers before they loot property and flee.”
Insp Sabau urged the public to ensure house doors are locked especially during late hours and to be careful with visitors who come at odd hours.
Recently, a Harare woman lost US$ 5 000, a vehicle and goods worth over US$22 000 when three armed robbers raided her Borrowdale home. Another family lost US$1 000 last month when two armed robbers stormed their flat in Belvedere.
