MDC-T activist in court

allegedly murdering a police officer last year, yesterday appeared in court.
Rukanda (33) appeared before magistrate Ms Anita Tshuma who remanded him in custody to February 10.
Ms Tshuma advised Rukanda to apply for bail at the High Court.
Prosecutor Mr David Magwegwe alleged that Rukanda was on the run since the arrest of the other 28. Rukanda was arrested at Market Square following a tip off from members of the public.
Mr Magwegwe said on May 29 last year, the activists, led by Tungamirai Madzokere, an MDC-T councillor in Glen View, convened an unsanctioned meeting at Glen View 1 shopping centre, which was called off by the police
He said the murdered police officer, Inspector Petros Mutedza, went to Glen View 3 as part of a reaction team assigned to disperse the group of MDC-T supporters who were holding the meeting.
Mr Magwegwe said Insp Mutedza approached the youth leaders, Robert Manyengavana and Paul Gorekore, who are still at large and ordered them to disperse peacefully. The activists started shouting at the police officers and began throwing stones, empty bottles, steel stool frames and other missiles at them.
Insp Mutedza and his team took to their heels with the youths in hot pursuit, hurling missiles at them. Insp Mutedza rushed to a Nissan Hardbody that he mistakenly identified as a police vehicle and tried to open the door to seek refuge, but the youths caught up with him and struck him with a brick.He fell down and they kicked him all over the body until he fell unconscious.
Insp Mutedza was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
