US$80m hospital for Masvingo on cards

improve the health delivery system in the province.

The new hospital will replace the existing facility that is struggling to cope with the increasing number of patients.
The hospital has also been affected by the obsolete equipment. Masvingo provincial medical director Dr Robert Mudyiradima yesterday said the hospital plan has already been drafted and awaits construction.

“The challenge at the moment is funding but there is urgency in Government to build the new hospital and we hope funds would be made available for construction to start.”
He said Government had already identified the construction site. The envisaged hospital, he said, would replace the existing facility as the provincial referral centre for Masvingo. Dr Mudyiradima expressed hope that

Finance Minister Tendai Biti would allocate funds for the hospital construction in the forthcoming national budget for 2012.
Government, council officials and Masvingo residents implored Minister Biti to allocate funds for the new hospital during pre-budget meetings in the province.

The residents indicated that the current referral centre was overwhelmed as some districts did not have district hospitals and patients are referred to Masvingo.
The residents, through the Masvingo Residents and Ratepayers Association and council, announced plans to raise funds for the hospital in 2009.
