A 31-year-old man appeared in court yesterday for his alleged role in the US$90 000 Old Mutual fraud.

Munyaradzi Ramhewa was granted $300 000 bail when he appeared before Harare Magistrate Dennis Mangosi yesterday.

His case was remanded to March 30, pending finalisation of investigations.

The State said in May last year, Ramhewa went to Henrics Providence Donga and Llyod Makuzwa, who are already on remand, and told them that his vehicle was involved in an accident, and he wanted it repaired.

The court heard that the trio then planned to defraud Old Mutual Insurance Company.

It is alleged they insured the vehicle, through Reality Njabulo Chuma for US$90 000, after it had already been involved in an accident.

The State said Donga and Makuzwa went to Mutare to meet Ramhewa and staged an accident involving the same car.

They staged the accident and reported it at ZRP Mutare Traffic.

It is alleged that Road Angels Towing Company attended the scene and towed the car.

On September 20, Ramhewa claimed insurance through a broker, and Old Mutual processed the money.

The matter came to light when Old Mutual discovered that the photos sent by Ramhewa were different from the ones submitted by Road Angeles, which towed the vehicle from the scene. Investigations showed that the trio had duped the company.

Pardon Dziva appeared for the State.
