ONE of Peter Moyo’s popular dancers Great Njanji says he has changed his stage name from “Officer” to “Detective”.
The dancer, who is usually clad in security guard attire, is part and parcel of the Utakataka Express’ choreography and popular for his fancy footwork.
“I am now a detective and that means I have to wear suits on stage. This is my new look and fans are going crazy about it,” he jokingly said.
However, depending on the crowd, venue and gig, he dresses according to the occasion.
“It all depends with the occasion because I noticed fans always want surprises. So, at times I would be dressed like an officer though the majority of shows I would be a detective. If you noticed when we performed in the capital city I dress in designer suits,” he said.
The 30-year-old dancer is one of the longest serving members of the Kwekwe-based group and has played a major part since the suspension of one of the energetic dancers popularly known as Suzuki a few weeks back.
The Utakataka Express had Harare to themselves when they staged a gig at Jazz 105 on Friday.
Fronted by Moyo or Young Igwe, the group staged one of their memorable shows as most big names in music were out of Harare.
Jazz 105 is one of their favourite venues and the turnout at the weekend confirmed this since there was hardly space to swing a cat.
The group also had a good crowd when it performed at Joy Centre in Chitungwiza on Saturday. Utakataka Express has a huge fan base which has grown over the years since the days of its late founder, Tongai Moyo. However, the Young Igwe is keeping his father’s legacy alive by ensuring that the group is intact although he lost two key band members – bassist Spencer Khumulani and chanter Gift Katulika aka Shiga Shiga – when he took charge of the band.
