Utseya rise on bowling rankings

The former captain rose to his career high ranking on the International Cricket Council Twenty20 bowling rankings where he is now 11th on the world standing with 646 rating points.

Zimbabwe desperately need to keep playing stronger opposition and India are next in line although reports have surfaced that the Asian powerhouse might want to have that tour rescheduled.

If that happens, it would be a huge blow to Zimbabwe Cricket, who badly need the financial return that comes with playing India, and the players who need the competition.

“I hope that India will be able to tour Zimbabwe because as players that is the only way we can get to play better cricket, get better on the individual and team rankings and if we get more games like that then we will be in a position to produce more world class players,” he told The Herald yesterday.

“I have set targets for myself over the next six weeks when we will be preparing for the Indian series. Fitness is my prime concern at the moment and that is what I will mainly be working on for the next four weeks and hopefully I will be ready.

“I did my best and I am happy with the way I bowled in the last ODI and the following T20’s because Queens Sports Club has always been a difficult wicket to bowl on as it favours the batsmen.

“I believe I have the ability to do well and be among the top players in the ODIs as well because in my last 10 games I have been consistent, I have tried to add some variation to my bowling style so that I spin the ball as much as I can and I am really putting my mind into what I am doing so that I achieve my best performances.”

There are a number of young bowlers who have emerged and shown a lot of promise.
“The young bowlers, who include Shingi Masakadza and Tendai Chatara, have shown that they have talent but talent alone does not do the complete job, especially looking at the fact that as Zimbabwe we do not play a lot of internationals.

“A lot of hard work has also got to be put in to add to that talent because at international level we meet batsmen who are equally good or would like to prove a point so there has to be a way of proving that one can do better and that can only come through hard work.

“I also feel that these young players also need to watch as much cricket as possible, learn from what they are watching and try to put it into practice and its all about learning fast and I believe the future is bright for Zimbabwe.”
