The University of Zimbabwe has acquired 474 residential stands in Harare for its employees. The stands were acquired through the University of Zimbabwe Workers Housing Trust.

In a speech read on his behalf by UZ Pro-Vice Chancellor Dr Takaruza Munyanyiwa at a ground-breaking ceremony recently, UZ Vice Chancellor Prof Levi Nyagura said the trust bought 39 hectares for allocation to its staff.

“The trust bought 39 hectares for US$525 000 and sub-divided the land to accommodate 474 housing stands, four commercial stands, one primary school and two churches,” he said.

Prof Nyagura said the City of Harare allowed the trust to build houses as minimum requirements for approval were met.

He said the housing project would be completed by 2017.

Prof Nyagura said the trust would engage a local bank for the construction of houses.

“The trust continues to engage CBZ Bank with the objective to agree on the construction costs for the five model housing plans which have been given to members. Once that is agreed, trust members will expect CBZ to start building the houses,” he said.
