A University of Zimbabwe lecturer has been hauled to court by his ex-wife over the upkeep of their two children.
Takawira Mubvami’s former wife, Memory Kiche, told the court that she was seeking an upward variation in maintenance, and demanded US$600.
“The money he was paying is no longer enough, and the other child needs to go to Form 1, while both of them need transport to and from school.
“I need rentals and also medicines for the other child who is asthmatic,” she said.
Responding to the application, Takawira told the court that he is only a part-time lecturer.
“I am just a part-time lecturer, I work for about 10 hours per semester. My offer is US$150 and I will pay fees on condition that the children are enrolled at a school that I can afford.
“I cannot afford private or boarding schools,” he said.
Memory said the children are enrolled at Prince Edward School and she wants them to continue learning there.
Magistrate Ayanda Dhlamini granted Memory US$150 maintenance plus school fees.
Both parties were ordered to look for a school which they would both agree on, as there are a lot of schools in Harare.
