The Harare Civil Court has ordered a University of Zimbabwe plumber to pay US$120 per month towards the upkeep of his three children, aged 16, 13 and eight as well contribute 50 percent towards school fees.
The order was made after Ms Makandipei Mazvidzi had approached the court seeking a monthly maintenance fee of US$450 from her partner, Mr Albert Gedza, whom she accused of failing to provide adequately for their children.
She presented a breakdown of the children’s monthly needs totalling US$450 and told the court that she is a vendor and earns about US$60 per month.
“The respondent is failing to provide for the children,” she said.
Ms Mazvidzi told the court that Mr Gedza is a plumber and earns US$320 plus ZiG6 800 per month. She said she needed US$255 towards the children’s school fees.
Mr Gedza offered to pay US$60 towards school fees and US$30 for the children’s upkeep.
He told the court that he is employed as a plumber at the University of Zimbabwe and has other dependants, including his ex mother-in-law, Ms Mazvidzi’s mother.
After hearing submissions from both parties, presiding magistrate Ms Janemary Makonye granted the maintenance application.
She ordered Mr Gedza to pay US$120 per month with effect from September 30, as well as 50 percent of the school fees for the three children.
