A trailblazing University of Zimbabwe team raised the country’s flag high after it made it to the top 10 best-performing universities at the prestigious Nelson Mandela World Human Rights Moot competition held in Geneva, Switzerland, last week.
Havana Sanderson and Natasha Dhliwayo represented the country and the team was the only one from Africa to make it to the top 10.
This competition started with the submission of memorials, which led to the selection of the top 50 universities for the oral rounds.
The UZ pair’s legal exploits saw them marching past the preliminary round, coming 9th out of 10 best-performing teams.
A total of 24 teams competed in the finals.
“I was impressed by how our university’s reading culture assisted me in reaching new heights,” Havana said.

“The University of Zimbabwe’s emphasis on legal research and writing is an essential skill that the moot society grooms young lawyers to learn early on.”
Said Natasha: “The moot court is an essential avenue for personal growth and career development. It helps you learn practical skills beyond what you can learn in class by reading.
“It embodies Education 5.0’s emphasis on active participation and learning by doing.”
This prestigious competition drew participants from over 92 universities worldwide, including Oxford University and the University of New South Wales, to mention a few.
The Nelson Mandela World Human Rights Moot Court Competition is the only global competition explicitly dedicated to human rights.
It is co-organised by the Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria, the Academy on Human Rights, Washington College of Law, American University, and the United Nations Human Rights Council Branch (HRCB) at the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).
The competition is an annual event in which students from around the world come together in Geneva to argue a hypothetical human rights case.
The best 10 teams from each UN region are then invited to participate in the pre-final, quarter-final, semi-final and final rounds of the competition.
