A GROUP of medical care professionals from the University of Zimbabwe College of Health Sciences will offer free clinics to the general public in Chitungwiza starting today (Saturday) under a social responsibility programme.
In a press release, the UZ said this was being done in collaboration with UZ-University of California San Francisco Research programme which aims to control the HIV and AIDS pandemic and contribute to global policy success.
“UZ-UCSF has worked in Chitungwiza for over a decade and we are concerned about the health of the community we work in,” read the statement.
“We will be offering free medical consultations and medication, HIV counselling and testing services, general health information and other feasible health related services in conjunction with PSI.”
Patients will be treated on a first come first served basis.
Members of the community were urged to come up with soccer and netball teams to compete and win an assortment of prizes.
The UZ-UCSF has six clinics in Harare and Chitungwiza — with four major networks conducting research which deals with women who are at risk to HIV infection as well as their male partners — integrated strategies to prevent HIV infection in women of reproductive age in Zimbabwe, among others.
Zimbabwe is reported to have an estimated one million people living with HIV and Aids.
