THE country’s representatives at the African Volleyball Club Men’s Championships, University of Zimbabwe (UZ) Wolves have bowed out of the tournament, having managed to reach the last 16 round.

The competition started last week in Cairo, Egypt at the Al Ahly Sports Complex. There were 21 teams in the contest. UZ Wolves were in Group D alongside Kenya Port Authority (Kenya), Green Buffaloes (Zambia) as well as teams from the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda.

On the road to the last 16, the Wolves lost their first match 3-1 to Kenya Ports Authority (KPA). They were to go down 3-0 to Rwanda Police in the following match.

They were to re-organise themselves in the following assignment as they managed to beat Zone VI champions, Green Buffaloes, 3-1 in their third game at the tournament.

In the round of the last 16, UZ Wolves lost to Al Nasser from Libya 3-0 on Saturday. That meant they were out of the title contention and only left with fighting for the 13th position today.

The teams head coach Gift Chirebvu, speaking from Egypt on Sunday afternoon, said he was proud of how well his players performed, especially against Green Buffaloes of Zambia, a powerhouse in the Southern Region.

“I am happy that we managed to reach the round of the 16 best teams in the tournament. It was a campaign worth the fight. We poured our all.

‘We lost to Al Nasser from Libya 3-0. And, we are out of the tournament now. What’s left is playing for position 13 to 16. We want to end well and get a positive result,” he said.

Beating Green Buffaloes in the group stages gave the team, the confidence they needed.

He said it was a perfect hunt.

“We outplayed them. We really did well to beat the Zone Six champions. We hunted down the Buffaloes.”
