WITH ever changing trends, women have taken a leading role in trying new products and procedures that are on the market in regards to their health needs. A local woman has however, brought in Yoni steaming to Bulawayo with the hope of transforming lives and health needs of women.

Ms Duduzile Matshazi, a beauty therapist yesterday launched Dash Beauty and Yoni Spar in Suburbs in a bid to offer women in the city a chance to get beauty various treatment under one roof. Top on the list that she will offer is Yoni steaming or vaginal steaming that has taken over the internet and is a hit with many women world-over.

Vaginal steaming, sometimes shortened to V-steaming, and also known as Yoni steaming, is an alternative health treatment whereby a woman squats or sits over steaming water containing herbs such as Mugwort, Rosemary, Wormwood, and Basil. It has been practised in Africa, Asia, and Central America.

People who practice vaginal steaming believe the herbs can penetrate vaginal tissues and offer a variety of benefits such as reducing menstrual symptoms, such as bloating, cramps, exhaustion, and heavy bleeding. It is said to also promote healing after child birth, detoxifying the womb, strengthen and cleanse the womb.

“I was born and bred in Bulawayo and I have always been a go-getter. I started beauty therapy in my 20s and advanced when I went to South Africa and eventually went to the United Kingdom and pursued my career in film make up. What triggered me to think of having a Yoni spa is when I visited Nigeria and I actually did the Yoni steaming treatment and I felt that it was worth introducing to my people back at home. We have had these things from ages ago, ukufutha but now it has just advanced a little and we can offer it to the public at a spa,” she said.

She added; “Yoni is basically the womb and reproductive system of a woman so the treatment basically entails that you sit over a steamer on a special chair designed for that. The steamer will contain a variety of herbs inside and it is 30 to 45 minutes per session and the steam does the work.

“There are different benefits of this treatment. Some people have heavy menstrual periods, period pains, it really helps and others simply want to clean and rejuvenate themselves and they come for Yoni steaming,” said Duduzile.

She said some herbs help to cleanse a woman’s system after child birth or after menstruation. Asked on how often one can come and do Yoni steaming, she said for the 45 minute-treatment one can come once a month and then do some shorter treatments at home if they have the herbs at home. The herbs for the Yoni steaming are sourced from Brazil, Ghana and Nigeria.

“My hope is to grow my own herbs locally and be able to use them for the spa, this also entails that will not have to go very far to source them,” she said.

The beauty spa which will be strictly for women offers among other things, facials, massages, manicures, pedicures, hair treatments, cleansing teas, waxing and a range of beauty and feminine hygiene products are available.

She said the spa is for women only due to the nature of their treatments and she wants to offer women enough privacy and comfort as they get services.
