While some youths might take Valentineas Day as a chance to a?get it ona? between the sheets, a group of Bulawayo youths is going against the tide by putting together a gig aimed at encouraging abstinence among young couples.
Pencilled for Saturday at the Bulawayo Centre, the event titled No Ring, No Riding, will see a number of up-and-coming Bulawayo artistes converge to encourage their peers to stay away from any sexual activity on the day set aside for lovers around the globe.
Organised by Dope Nation Records, a group of producers and musicians in the hip-hop and house genres, the gig will allow young performers a platform to exhibit their work at one of the more accessible venues in the City of Kings while touching base with an age group that is most likely to indulge in sex before marriage.
According to Mqondisi a?Bishopya? Nzipho, a performer and also one of the organisers of the event, Valentineas Day was an ideal day for them to push their abstinence before marriage agenda as it was one of the days that might inspire youths to indulge in sexual activity.
a?There canat be a better day than Valentineas Day because it is a day that a lot of youths attach special meaning to.
Bringing up-and-coming artistes into the picture also allows us to pursue our passion as artistes and so we are killing two birds with one stone,a? he said.
Bishopy said although the show was targeted at the youths, it would be welcome to have an adult presence at the show. He added that they hoped to rope the National Aids Council of Zimbabwe into some of their projects, as Saturdayas gig was the second they were having in as many months.
