LONG distance runner Wellington Varevi has set his eyes on the forthcoming National Cross Country Championships scheduled for November 22 in Bindura to try and earn his ticket to the world event.
The national event presents a platform for the selection of athletes that represent the country at the World Cross Country Championships.
Next year’s edition comes early, with the competition due to take place on January 10 in Tallahassee in Florida, USA.
Varevi, who represented Zimbabwe at the 2024 edition after winning the national competition is hoping for another dance at the global championships.
He emerged tops in the men’s 10km at the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service Commissioner General’s Goodwill Trust Fund Harare Metropolitan Province half marathon held last Sunday.
Varevi said he would want to compete at the World Cross Country Championships again.
“I will continue training, early November I shift my focus to specifically prepare for the national cross country.
“My aim is to make it for the World Cross Country and try again, maybe make the top 15 or 20,” said Varevi.
The Black Rhinos athlete who was in camp for some time with the marathon runners going to the World Championships in Tokyo, Japan used Sunday’s race to measure his progress as he seeks to run his first marathon next year.
