FIVE men and women volleyball teams are set to represent the nation in this year’s Zone Six Club Championships next week in Maputo, Mozambique.The week-long tournament, starting on Monday, will see clubs drawn from countries within the Southern Africa region battling for honours.
Botswana, Malawi, Namibia, Angola, Mozambique, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe are taking part.
Zimbabwe will be represented by Support Unit, Naba and Stanbic Thunder in the men’s section.
Support Unit will also field a women’s team that will join University of Zimbabwe in the women’s category.
The teams qualified to participate in the event after finishing top at the national championships held this year.
The other four teams, Support Unit men and women, Naba and Stanbic Thunder left the country yesterday while UZ is expected to head for Mozambique today.
Zimbabwe Volleyball Association, secretary general, Ringisai Mapondera, said they were hoping the teams will put up a better show this year after struggling in the previous championships.
“We are expecting them to do better this year because they have maintained the same people, so it’s merely the same team. Support Unit also they have the experience in the men’s team, they have been there before and Naba it’s their first time but we hope they will also do well,” said Mapondera.
