Vehicle clearance improves

The processing of imported vehicles has, however, improved significantly with importers spending about one to three hours to clear cars.
It also emerged that Zimra increased the number of officers per shift from eight to 13. The officers work on four eight-hour shifts.

Zimra has also removed touts and dealers from its premises. The touts were allegedly causing congestion in the section. Zimra is now attending to the clients directly and registered customs clearance clerks only.

Car dealers and individuals also expressed happiness at the rate the vehicles were being cleared. Director for corporate and legal affairs Ms Florence Jambwa recently said Zimra had 29 officers in the vehicle clearance section.
She said they were using the ASYCUDA ++ (Automated System for Customs Data) for vehicle clearance, which does not require Internet connectivity.

“We have not been receiving complaints of delays of late. We are addressing this matter by continuing to offer excellent and efficient service to clients.”
She said there were no backlogs for Customs Clearance Certificates.

“We have consistently managed to capture and release all CCC applications that we receive on a daily basis,” she said.
Travellers, however, have to queue for hours for duty and levy payments for various goods.
