A 57-YEAR-OLD Rusape vendor lost cash amounting to over US$9,000 and ZiG 3,000 after robbers broke into her home while she was attending a funeral on Sunday.
The US$5,000 was sent by her daughter, who is based in the United States, for the purpose of purchasing a vehicle.
She got US$3,800 from another daughter, who is based in Harare, for safekeeping.
The ZiG 3,000 were proceeds from her vending business.
Acting Manicaland police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka, confirmed the incident, which occurred in Mabvazuva suburb in Rusape.
Ass Insp Chinyoka said the incident took place on Thursday last week while the complainant, Locadia Makoni, was away.
“On March 22, and at around 0900 hours, Makoni left her residence in Mabvazuva, Rusape, to attend a funeral at Nyabadza Village under Chief Makoni.
“She secured her house by locking all doors and windows.
“During the complainant’s absence, an unknown accused person used an unidentified object to break the bedroom window pane and burglar bars before gaining entry into the house.
“The suspect proceeded to ransack the entire house.”
He added:
“Cash amounting to US$5,000 which was kept in the bedroom was stolen.
“Another US$3,800, which was in a black handbag placed on the bed, was also taken.
“In addition, US$682, which were church funds, was stolen, along with ZiG 3,000 which was in the wardrobe,” he said.
Makoni indicated that part of the stolen money had been entrusted to her for safekeeping by family members.
Ass Insp Chinyoka appealed to members of the public for information that may lead to the arrest of the suspects.
“We are appealing to anyone with information that may assist in the investigation to report to their nearest police station,” he said.
