HWANGE Local Board has allocated bays and signed lease agreements with vendors at the newly established vegetable market stalls at Empumalanga’s DRC Shopping Centre in a move aimed at promoting orderly and hygienic trading while boosting local economic activity.

Ward 6 Councillor, Mlungisi Zhanero, welcomed the development, describing it as a significant milestone in the local authority’s efforts to improve service delivery and create a conducive business environment for small-scale traders.
Speaking after the allocation exercise, Cllr Zhanero said the formalisation of trading spaces will help bring order to the marketplace and enhance cleanliness within the shopping centre precinct.
“The allocation of bays and signing of lease agreements is a positive development for our vendors and the community at large. It creates a structured trading environment, improves hygiene standards and ensures that traders operate from secure and designated spaces,” he said.
Cllr Zhanero said the initiative demonstrates Hwange Local Board’s commitment to supporting informal traders, who play a critical role in the local economy through the supply of fresh produce and other goods.
He said the new market stalls will not only improve the working conditions of vendors but also offer greater convenience to customers by providing an organised and accessible trading area.
“The market is expected to enhance compliance with local regulations while contributing to the growth of small businesses and livelihoods. As a local authority, we remain committed to creating opportunities that empower our people and improve the overall appearance of our trading centres,” said Cllr Zhanero.
The establishment of the market stalls forms part of ongoing efforts by Hwange Local Board to modernise trading infrastructure, improve sanitation and promote sustainable informal trading within the district.
Vendors who received their bays expressed optimism that the new facilities will enhance their businesses by providing a safer and more organised environment for trading.
The development is expected to contribute to local economic growth while reinforcing efforts to maintain a clean and orderly business environment at Empumalanga’s DRC Shopping Centre.
