A NUMBER of vendors were this morning arrested for staging an illegal demonstration over the continuous closure of Chidzere and Sakubva flea markets.

According to the police, more than 3 000 vending stalls at the markets were illegally parcelled out to vendors on Monday.

Police confirmed the arrests and said they will avail more information as investigations continue.

The group of vendors marched while singing and waving placards from the Sakubva Market to the city centre, before the police arrested them.

In an earlier interview, the vendors had said they wanted dialogue with the local authority to chat the best way forward.

The markets were closed last year as the country put in place measures to contain the Covid-19 pandemic.

In a brief comment on a Mutare Residents WhatsApp group, acting Town Clerk, Dr Anthony Mutara said: “Order is very important in any society for the survival of us all.”
