Veteran broadcaster Mr John Masuku has died.

He was 74.

In a statement, the Masuku family said the media personality passed away at his home in Mabelreign, Harare, this morning.

Mr Masuku was a towering figure in Zimbabwean broadcasting, with a distinguished career spanning five decades.

Renowned for his distinctive voice and authoritative yet warm delivery, he became a household name through his work on national radio before later transitioning into television and media mentorship.

“The Masuku family confirms with profound sadness the passing of Mr John Masuku, who passed away at his home in Mabelreign on the morning of Friday, 13 February 2026,” reads the statement.

“Though he had a known heart condition, Mr Masuku was in good health and going about his normal activities.

“His passing has come as a complete shock to the family, and we are still trying to process this sudden and unexpected loss.”

In a poignant coincidence, Mr Masuku’s death occurred on World Radio Day, an international observance that celebrates radio as a medium for education, information and cultural expression — the very platform to which he dedicated most of his life.

“Today marks World Radio Day, a day that held special meaning for Mr Masuku, who loved radio deeply. He passed on a day dedicated to a medium he cherished,” reads the statement.

“The family respectfully requests privacy and space to grieve during this very difficult time.”

Over the years, Mr Masuku played a pivotal role in shaping the country’s broadcasting landscape, influencing generations of broadcasters through both his on-air presence and behind-the-scenes guidance.

Colleagues and audiences alike respected Mr Masuku for his professionalism, passion and deep understanding of the power of broadcasting as a public service.

Even in his later years, Mr Masuku remained actively engaged in the media industry, continuing to advocate for the growth and integrity of broadcasting in Zimbabwe.

Mourners are gathered at his residence at Number 1 Pat Palmer Owen Drive, Cotswold Hills, Mabelreign.
