Sibanda passed away on Sunday and will be buried at his rural home in Mberengwa tomorrow.
Sibanda (60), died in the early hours of Sunday at his home in Unit N, Chitungwiza, after suffering from a suspected heart attack.
In an interview, Christopher Sibanda, younger brother to the veteran presenter-producer, said they would leave Harare for Mberengwa today.
“We are leaving for Chief Chizu village in Mberengwa in the afternoon and the burial would be on tomorrow at 10 in the morning,” said Sibanda.
He said the sudden death of his brother came as a great shock to the family.
“Sam was a father figure to all of us, he was loving and gave us guidance all the time and his sudden departure has dealt a cruel blow to us,” said Sibanda.
The late Sibanda, popularly known as Sammy Boy, was last heard on radio on Saturday morning during his mid-morning shift.
He was scheduled to be on radio on Sunday for his 9-12 mid-day show but he passed on as he was preparing to leave for work.
His younger brother said he suffered a stroke in 2004 and had been partially paralysed since then, although he could walk.
The late Sibanda did his primary school education at Chingezi and Bungwe before moving to Chegato Secondary school in Mberengwa.
He joined the Rhodesian Broadcasting Corporation in 1975 before it changed to the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation at Independence.
After independence in 1980, he rose to fame on Radio 2 with his early morning shows, Kwayedza/Kusile that were characterised by his humour.
Sammy Boy also presented a variety of programmes including Dzechinyakare, Rhumba Music and other talk show programmes.
Mourners are gathered at number 12585 Unit N in Chitungwiza.
He is survived by his wife, two children and two grand children.
