A BULAWAYO-BASED veteran football coach who was arrested on Monday evening following allegations that he raped a 19-year-old woman has been released from police custody without being charged.

The coach spent the night at Bulawayo Central Police Station before being released on Tuesday as police investigated the allegations.

Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Nomalanga Msebele confirmed the coach’s release, saying no case had been established against him.

“There is nothing, no case,” said Insp Msebele.

The coach was reportedly arrested after the young woman, who works at a city lodge where he had been staying, made the allegations following an altercation between the two.

Sources familiar with the incident said the dispute allegedly arose after the coach complained that his room had not been properly cleaned.

According to the sources, the coach allegedly threatened to have the woman dismissed from her job over what he described as dereliction of duty.

“The coach threatened to have her fired for dereliction of duty and we believe that is what led her to make these very grave but unfortunate accusations against the coach,” said one source.

The allegations resulted in the coach being taken into police custody while investigations were conducted.

He was subsequently released without charge.

The identities of the coach and the complainant have been withheld.
