The Veterans of the Liberation Struggle Bill, which seeks to provide rights and benefits to veterans of the liberation struggle, sailed through the National Assembly yesterday.
The Bill, which was passed with amendments, now awaits transmission to Senate.
The purpose of the Bill is to provide for rights and benefits of veterans of the liberation struggle and their dependants.
It also seeks to provide for the establishment of the Veterans of the Liberation Struggle Fund, constitute a Veterans of the Liberation Struggle Board, its composition and functions.
The Bill will repeal the Ex-Political Prisoners, Detainees and Restrictees Act.
Defence and War Veterans Minister Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri proposed some amendments during the Bill’s committee stage on Tuesday, saying she was responding to concerns that came from stakeholders, who included war veterans.
Some of the amendments made by Minister Muchinguri-Kashiri included change of the term “liberation war fighter” to “war veteran” for the sake of consistency.
Minister Muchinguri-Kashiri also amended clause three by removing the requirement that the Commander of Zimbabwe Defence Forces be the chair of the war veterans’ board and replaced it with a representative from war veterans appointed by the minister in consultation with the President.
