Vic Falls gets new Town Clerk

VICTORIA Falls Municipality has engaged its former Treasurer, Christopher Dube as substantive Town Clerk after going for more than two years with an acting clerk. Dube, 54, takes over from Phillip Ndlovu who had been serving in an acting capacity. A holder of a Master’s Degree in Business Association from the Zimbabwe Open University and a full chartered accountant with CIS, the new town clerk brings in vast experience to the local authority after previously serving government in different ministries as finance director for more than 10 years.

The former top civil servant was the Victoria Falls Municipality treasurer between January 1999 and February 2002, before joining the Foreign Affairs Ministry as finance director, a position he held until December 2005.

He also worked in the same capacity in the then Ministry of Rural Housing and Social Amenities, the Public Works Ministry and then the Ministry of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing until his latest appointment which is effective from May 1.

Dube, who is studying for a degree in law through Unisa, said he was geared to steer the resort town to greater heights through implementing the government’s economic blueprint, Zimbabwe Agenda for Sustainable Socio-Economic Transformation (Zim-Asset).

“We have an economic blueprint by government which should be implemented and for it to work, we need as local authorities to adopt it because government cannot do it alone,” he said from his new office.

“Our biggest undoing is sticking to traditional ways of raising revenue,” he added suggesting that they would soon find other innovative ways of increasing revenue.

Dube said among his plans for the council, was to transform Victoria Falls into the Durban or Cape Town of Zimbabwe by developing the best infrastructure that would continue to attract major international conferences and boost tourist arrivals.

“I am ready to work with any developmental partner to help the local authority build and maintain infrastructure,” said the new municipality boss.
Dube is married and has four children.
