THE Victoria Falls Town council has proposed to rename Livingstone Way, Robert Mugabe Way and Park Way, Joshua Nkomo Way, as a way of honouring the country’s two legendary leaders.
The proposal was made at a recent full council meeting but the matter was referred back to the technical services committee.
Town Clerk, Christopher Dube, said in an interview the renaming will be implemented after the next full council meeting.
“The proposal was not adopted. It was referred back to the technical committee for further consideration. I’ve explained to the committee and it understood the concept but it will only be implemented after the next full council meeting,” said Dube.
He said the development was pushed by the observation that the city was the only one that had not responded to the call to honour the country’s nationalists through renaming roads after them.
“There is a general observation that all other municipalities except Victoria Falls responded to the call as we don’t have a single road in honour of our leaders. That is awkward and as a council we’ve to follow suit. Park Way will change to Joshua Nkomo Way while Livingstone Way will be renamed Robert Mugabe Way,” said the Town Clerk.
Livingstone Way is the major road stretching from Victoria Falls Border Post passing through the Central Business District and connecting with the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Highway.
Park Way branches from Livingstone Way in the city centre near the municipal offices, goes past Elephant Hills Resort and A’ Zambezi Lodge before stretching northwards to National Parks and Wildlife Main Camp.
Dube said the council had set up a sub-committee responsible for renaming the roads.
“We’ve a lot of roads that don’t have names and the committee is looking into this,” he said.
Meanwhile, the council will early next month confer the status of alderman to two former councillors. The council will also confer alderman status to councillor still in office.
Former mayor, Nkosilathi Jiyane and councillor Patricia Mwale will assume the title of alderman while the late Councillor Paulosi Chiliwe will be conferred posthumously, the Town Clerk said.
The status is accorded to a councillor who would have served council for more than 10 years consecutively.
