Vic Falls hosts sevens rugby tournament

Old Miltonians, Matabeleland Warriors, Western Panthers, Matabeleland Select, Gweru Sports Club, Zvishavane Bulls, Hwange Diggers, Western Bulldogs and Victoria Falls Old Boys take to the field in the two-day event sponsored by Tatenda Safaris.

The nine teams have been drawn into three pools with teams finishing top of each pool progressing through to the cup pool with the winners as well as runners-up in the cup pool going on to compete in the cup final on Sunday morning. All hope will not be lost for the teams finishing in second and third position in the knockout phase with the second-placed teams going to the plate while the teams ending at the bottom advance to the bowl competition.

A spokesperson for the organisers, Tawanda Gunda said the event was in honour of the late national hero Armstrong Gunda who died in 2007.

”We are having a Sevens Rugby tournament in Victoria Falls on Saturday and Sunday. All the teams will be provided with transport to and from Victoria Falls and will also get complimentary accommodation at Tatenda Lodge. This is a way of remembering my father. It is an effort to keep his legacy alive through this rugby tournament. The first prize is going to be $200, a trophy and there will be something for all the teams taking part. We hope to make this an annual event if all goes well this year,” said Gunda.

Some of the players expected to make up the Victoria Falls Old Boys are Tawanda Gunda, Simbarashe Gonese and Denham Zimbudzana who all attended Victoria Falls Primary School. Matabeleland Warriors, OM’s, Panthers, Gweru Sports Club and Zvishavane Bulls are also participating in the second leg of the Spar Summer series at the Country Club in Harare on Saturday but it is expected they are going to send competitive sides to Victoria Falls.
