Vic Falls residents build community hall

RESIDENTS of Mkhosana Township in Victoria Falls have taken it upon themselves to build a community hall motivated by the need to create a recreational place to keep youths off the streets and out of crime.

The resort town has only one community hall located in Chinotimba Township and has no other recreational facilities.

Residents have attributed immorality and the high rate of criminal acts perpetrated by youths to lack of recreational facilities and community halls where youths could be kept busy.

The hall will be located in Mfelandawonye section of Mkhosana Township.

The multipurpose community hall will be used for community functions and act as a training and recreational centre for youths.

“The issue of a hall has been in our plans for more than 10 years and now it has been approved,” said Victoria Falls Residents Housing Association vice chairman Godfrey Dube.

“The project will be funded by residents but we’re going to look for sponsors as well as donations from local businesspersons.

“We’re going to meet again and see how much we can be contributing and at the moment we’ve already bought two truckloads of river sand while pit sand is coming so that we start moulding bricks on site. This will be done by us as residents.”

Mfelandawonye Residents Housing Association was established about a decade ago, but has been fighting court battles with the mother union — Dialogue on Shelter — a registered trust that is also a technical partner for the Zimbabwe Homeless People’s Federation.

The residents are buoyed by a recent court ruling in which the Victoria Falls magistrates court ruled in their favour and barred the national leadership of Dialogue on Shelter from interfering with the running of the housing project.
