IN the heart of the majestic Victoria Falls, a rising Afro-pop star, Godwin Ngwenya, is charting a course that could place his hometown firmly on Zimbabwe’s musical map.

Performing under the stage name Raaz_Mahlazi, the singer-songwriter began his musical journey in 2016, inspired by a passion for storytelling through sound and a deep-rooted love for his cultural identity.

With a commanding stage presence, thought-provoking lyrics, and a genre-blending style, Raaz_Mahlazi has carved a distinct space in the Victoria Falls music scene. His sound bridges Afro-pop, dancehall, gospel, and traditional Zimbabwean rhythms, a fusion that has resonated beyond the region.

Tracks like Magagasi, Izankaleli, Madube, uWrong, and Lockdown have not only won him local fans but have also started to capture national attention.
“Music has always been more than just sound to me, it’s been a way to feel, to speak, and to connect. I started making music because of how it helped me through moments I couldn’t explain. Whether it was a song that made me feel understood or a melody that lifted me out of a dark place, music became my safe space,” said Raaz_Mahlazi.

“Now, every beat, lyric, and harmony I write is a piece of my story, a message to someone who might need it most.”

As he looks ahead, Raaz_Mahlazi is focused on strengthening the bond with his fans and growing his reach through live performances and self-organised events.
“I have four projects coming up this year. My current single Ngiyak’khumbula, featuring Bulawayo-based Khwezi, is set for release next month. This year, I’m fully taking charge, organising my own shows and collaborating with talented artists across Zimbabwe and beyond.”

He revealed that the first of these efforts will be a singles launch event on June 21, 2025, at Comfort Pub and Grill, featuring performances by Boomkid, Cypho, and Gulemotion.
“It’s about expanding the sound, reaching new ears, and showing that even from a small city like Vic Falls, big waves can be made.” – Follow on X: @mthabisi_mthire
