Vic Falls to twin with Chinese town

In an interview on his return from week-long visit to China yesterday, Clr Jiyane said there would be a Chinese delegation coming to Zimbabwe at the end of October to explore investment opportunities.
Clr Jiyane’s trip was funded by the Ministry of Local Government, Rural and Urban Development under the China-Africa Local Government Co-operation.
“I am glad to report back that our town is in the process of twinning with Oolong in China. Oolong is a town with a population of about three million people and has business interests in tourism, mining and infrastructural development,” he said.

Clr Jiyane said the twinning arrangement was of importance to the residents of Victoria Falls as the town would benefit from investment in tourism, soft loans and housing developments among other benefits.

“Some of the benefits to Victoria Falls are cultural exchanges between Zimbabwe and China, training of councillors and management, avenue for other councillors and management to join as members of China-Africa Local Government Cooperation, technology advancement in construction and donations in the form of plant and equipment,” he said.

Meanwhile, Clr Jiyane said since this was the first forum of China-Africa Local Government Cooperation, a board of directors for the forum had been elected.

“Under the board of directors are members of the forum, who elect the board. From Zimbabwe, the Mayor of Mutare, Governor for Mashonaland West and myself were elected to be members of the forum for two years,” he said.
