Vice President Dr Kembo Mohadi is today expected to officiate at the Zodwa Mkandla Foundation Golf Day, which tees off at the Country Club in Newlands, Harare to raise US$150 000 to support the less privileged.
Now in its second year, the Golf Day is the brainchild of businesswoman and philanthropist Ms Zodwa Mkandla.
With a diverse field of golfers, including professionals and amateurs taking part at the annual event, organisers say the bulk of the funds raised will be directed to people living with disabilities.
“Last year, we managed to buy 100 electric wheelchairs and 500 traditional ones. This time around we want to buy about a thousand wheelchairs,” Ms Mkandla said.
An established businesswoman, Mkandla envisions a situation where the disabled community is empowered.
Running under the banner ‘Unleashing hope in action’, the Zodwa Mkandla Foundation engages in targeted interventions that address core socio-economic challenges, particularly affecting women, youth and people living with disabilities.
“In giving back to the community that supported my early journey, we strive to create opportunities where they were once scarce,” Ms Mkandla said.
“We are glad to be graced by the Vice President Dr Kembo Mohadi, who is officiating the event. Golf is available to anyone, it’s no longer an elite sport, so everyone should enjoy the sport.
“But the main theme is to support the disabled community by buying electric wheelchairs. We have identified that you have somebody on the wheelchair and most of the time someone is also pushing the wheelchair.
“This means now we have two people disabled. So part of our effort is to raise about $150 000 to buy electric wheelchairs.”
Some of the professional golfers expected include Innocent Mukumba, Nevy Milazi, Tongo Charamba and Darlington Chikanyambidze.
“We also have a mixture of corporates that are coming in. So, we have got quite a large portfolio of different companies that are contributing,” said Ms Mkandla..
“Then we have also some professional golfers that are coming in, plus some amateurs and individual players.”
Recent community outreach efforts by the Foundation were done in the Sonjini area near Mbembesi where blankets, sanitary products, wheelchairs and essential toiletries were donated.
