In a major environmental achievement, the iconic Victoria Falls has been officially accredited as a Wetland City.
The 64th Standing Committee on Wetland City Accreditation announced the prestigious recognition, made alongside 30 other cities.
Wetlands are invaluable ecosystems that provide numerous benefits to communities, such as water purification, flood control, and climate regulation. They are also crucial habitats for diverse flora and fauna.
However, wetlands are disappearing at an alarming rate, with 35 percent lost globally since 1970, three times faster than forests.
Wetlands around the globe are under severe threat due to rapid urbanization, industrial development, and climate change.
Pollution, drainage for agriculture, and infrastructure development are some of the primary drivers of wetland degradation.
Known locally as “Mosi-oa-Tunya” or “The Smoke That Thunders,” Victoria Falls is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World.
The new accolade comes at a pivotal time as the city prepares to host the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands COP15 from July 23 to July 31 this year.
The Ramsar Convention, established in 1971, is an international treaty focused on the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands.
