THE Victoria Falls border post will be temporarily closed tomorrow to allow for the smooth running of the Econet Victoria Falls marathon.
A notice posted on a local website, Victoria Falls News said the border post would be closed until the end of the race at noon.
“The Victoria Falls marathon is being held this weekend on Sunday and anyone running will need to be in Zimbabwe the night before as the Zimbabwe-Zambia border will be closed in the morning for the race,” reads the notice.
No official comment could be obtained from the Immigration Department, but a source said the decision was made by head office in Harare after consultation with all parties involved.
More than 800 runners had registered for the marathon by yesterday, although the registration process is still open until 5PM today, according to the notice.
The race includes a full marathon, half marathon and a 7.5KM fun run.
Entry fees for the full and half marathons are $40 for foreigners, $20 for foreigners resident in Zimbabwe and $10 for Zimbabwean citizens.
Entry into the fun race has been pegged at $3.
The race starts opposite the banks and Avis Garage along Livingstone Way, which stretches to the border post.
The full marathon starts at 6.45AM, half marathon at 7.15AM and fun run at 8.30AM.
The finishing line is at Victoria Falls Primary School and the prize giving ceremony would be held at 10.45AM for the full and half marathons.
Fun runners will get spot prizes.
The marathon has over the years been dominated by Blanket Mine athlete, Nkosiyazi Sibanda, who has won consecutive titles since 2012.
Winners of the full marathon, both men and women, will walk away with $900 while half marathon winners are set to get $500.
