A NEW HIV and Aids specialist clinic that will offer free medical services has been opened in Victoria Falls. Victoria Falls Medical Centre was officially opened on Friday and is set to service Hwange and Victoria Falls. The clinic is a brainchild of World Health Clinicians through their Beat Aids Project Zimbabwe (BAPZ), their local chapter.
The organisation is working in conjunction with the government and the Ministry of Health and Child Care and gave the clinic $40, 000 that will go towards operational costs.
Speaking at the opening, Victoria Falls Mayor Sifiso Mpofu, who was the guest of honour, said the opening of the facility was a milestone as it would help reduce HIV/Aids related deaths.
“I’m very excited about such a development in our community. Having such a clinic will mean that many people will now have access to treatment thereby reducing deaths. We’re confident that through this clinic we’ll also be able to fight stigma as many programmes will be done here,” Mpofu.
World Health Clinicians chief medical officer Gary Blick said the facility would offer treatment free of charge. “This clinic is a dream come true for us. I came to visit Zimbabwe 15 years ago and that’s when I started thinking of having such a facility dedicated to the community and today we’re celebrating this achievement which will serve the next generation in the fight against HIV and Aids,” said Blick, who is also founder of World Health Clinicians.
