THE 21st February Movement celebrations marking President Mugabe’s 91st birthday will be hosted by Matabeleland North province and will be held in the resort town of Victoria Falls.

This was announced by Zanu-PF Matabeleland North provincial youth chairperson Cde Tamuka Nyoni during a Provincial Coordinating Committee (PCC) meeting held in Lupane on Saturday. “We’ve been informed that this year, the President’s birthday will be held in the province, specifically in Victoria Falls. We know that this is a programme for the youth, but we appeal to our leaders to assist us in hosting the event,” Cde Nyoni said.

He said the youth needed to be orderly as they wanted to make sure the event was a success.

“No date has been given yet, but now that the holidays are over, we want to meet and set up a committee towards the celebrations. We hope that we will get cooperation, particularly from leaders in Victoria Falls,” Cde Nyoni said.

Zanu-PF Matabeleland North provincial chairman Cde Richard Moyo said the Provincial Executive Council (PEC) would also convene to find ways to assist the youths. “This is a very important event and we need to assist the youths in making sure that everything goes smoothly,” Cde Moyo said.

Meanwhile, Cde Nyoni has said they will hold a demonstration against politburo member Cde Sithembiso Nyoni if she does not apologise for describing the provincial leadership as shallow.

He said Cde Nyoni should step down from the positions given to her since she was not confident of the very people who put her there. “Because of Matabeleland North, she holds high positions in the government and politburo but now she’s turning against those people that put her where she is saying they are shallow,” said the youth chairperson.

“That’s unacceptable, as the youth we’re saying if she doesn’t come and stand before us and apologise, she’ll find us at the entrance of this building with placards denouncing her.”

The youth leader dismissed allegations that only youths from Umguza demonstrated against Cde Nyoni and some senior leaders accused of fanning factionalism during an inter-district conference held in the run up to last year’s congress.

Cde Douglas Khoza, who replaced Cde Clifford Sibanda as provincial secretary for administration after the Bubi legislator was elected into the Central Committee, said the province should be wary of “imports” like Cde Nyoni who came from other provinces.

Cde Khoza said the likes of Cde Nyoni gave an impression that there was a leadership vacuum in Matabeleland North.
