watch television.
However, my weekend was really disappointing, to say the least.
The reasons were that after The Herald had an exclusive interview with one Jimmy Jimalo at his home in Highfield some two weeks back, we woke up to the news that he died on Saturday after succumbing to cancer.
I know death is never timely but the saddest thing was that during my interview with him, Jimalo showed me the confidence and hope that he was on his way to recovery. Like the true gentleman that he was, Jimalo took me around his house including his bedroom where he showed us his “pimped up” house with loads of stuff. His wife, Agnes, and the children gave us a warm welcome and after we finished the interview he told
me that I could come anytime to check on him. How sad!
To his family and friends and everyone, we send our deepest condolences and may his soul rest in peace.
From Amplified to Big Brother Nullified
The second disappointment at the weekend was that Zimbabwe’s housemate in Big Brother Amplified was evicted from the show on Sunday.
There was no denying the fact that Vimbai was one of the brightest housemates in the house and everybody knew this. Both Uganda’s Sharon O and Zambia’s Kim acknowledged this but what was all the more surprising was that the girls had this “pull her down” attitude.
For those who remember I wrote in one of my pieces that Big Brother Amplified had run its course and M-Net Africa should just forget about the show because it is continuously losing its appeal. The main reason for this is that the show has truly become a “Nigerian affair” and the rest of Africa is just there to dignify the obvious.
If you don’t believe this then you need to take a look at how the votes are now being collated. There were four housemates – Hanni, Wendall, Lomwe and Millicent with two country votes each. But when it came to percentage votes Hanni grabbed 18,98 percent of the total votes from Nigeria and Ethiopia. Wendall polled 15,42 percent, Lomwe had 15,02 percent and Millicent got 9,38 percent of the total votes. Now tell me, isn’t there strength in numbers? The point is, no matter how much Africa votes, the Nigerian vote is crucial to any result and because of this I got no more love for the whole show.
The Musorowegomo Issue
In my last piece I asked where Musorowegomo Mukosi, the vibrant and talented newscaster, was and I got overwhelming responses from readers. However, as always is the case, I got mixed reactions with some readers questioning the reason I singled out Musorowegomo when there are others who are also missing in action.
Well, I will admit there are a lot of newsreaders, or should I say broadcasters, who are not on ZBCTV right now but the thing is some have resigned while others have better offers elsewhere, for instance, Hugo Ribatika, who is doing well in business and the list is endless. What I discovered was that a lot of people want to see Murosorowegomo back on the screen but I emphasise, the onus is on the powers-that-be at Pockets Hill. Below are some of the views from readers.
Dear Jonathan – Thanks for bringing the issue about Musorowegomo. Look, the guy is talented and he’s young maybe he should be given another chance on ZBCTV. – From Zanele.
Hie – It’s ok if ZBCTV brings back Musorowegomo on the screens but Jonathan did you try to find out what was his reason for leaving in the first place? – CM Warren Park.
Hie – I read your story on Musorowegomo with keen interest. Honestly speaking, he was one of the few newsreaders with the voice for television. I also liked him when he presented his programmes on farming. – DC, Marondera
Hey Jonathan – Musorowegomo is just but one of the talented newsreaders we have in this country and like you rightly pointed out he needs a second chance on TV. – Majuru, Chitungwiza.
