Vincent, Nguru in Zim matchplay quarter-finals

Zimbabwe Amateur Matchplay tournament, which teed off yesterday at Royal Harare.
The tournament has the top 16 golfers from Zimbabwe Amateur Cha-mpionships taking part in a knockout encounter.
The draw, conducted on Sunday, saw defending champion Vincent and bitter rival Nguru getting a bye after other golfers failed to turn up.
The golfers had to wait for the afternoon session where the top seeds played against each other.
Fourth seed Emanuel Hungwe beat Bernard Magaso in the morning round while Nicolas Masunga beat Warick Calasse. The other match had V. Gordad getting the better of Kayyan Mandhu as Greg Bentley won against Shepherd Chiwaya.
The last ball saw Big Chibvuri beating Royal champion Kyle Basson.
The Zimbabwe Matchplay conveyer and national team manager Boniface Chigorimbo said they were happy with how the tournament was progressing.
“I think we have one of the best tournament this year. We had good conditions at Chapman for the qualifiers as the rough was causing challenges and that is increasing the competition.
“We are having a lot of excitement with a few new faces coming on board at this year’s competition which shows we are improving.
“We had a problem in terms of turnout as others who were supposed to be here were committed to other things.
“Players like Garry Thompson, Nabill Umjee, Nyasha Muyambo and the Hudson brothers could not make it as they are in school in South Africa,” Chigorimbo said.
Meanwhile, the women’s club championships went ahead over the weekend across the country with Sarah Jane Bennett winning the Royal Harare title.
