Zimbabwean visual artists Sabina Mutsvati and Chipo Mapondera are in Denmark for the Copenhagen Film Festival showcasing the ‘Futuristic Pagan’.
‘Futuristic Pagan’ explores Shona spiritual practices and traditions through virtual reality.
The viewer is guided through a natural environment and learns about the plants and animals with significant ties to the spiritual realm.
On return to the homestead, the viewer explores Imba Ya Mai, the Mother’s kitchen.
This matriarchal setting is the space for the fashion showroom, presenting the first collection that Sabina Mutsvati has designed in a fully digital process.
The duo said this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience and a learning curve as they seek to better their project with expert analysis.
“The experience so far is really pushing us to develop the project at the highest level, breaking it apart to build it again and tell a stronger story,” said Mapondera.
Mutsvati echoed her colleague’s sentiments and said the initiative could not have come at a better time.
“I think it has been great. The process of dissecting has been a bit much but l am glad that we are getting the exposure,” she said.
