The Vendors Initiative for Social and Economic Transformation (VISET) in collaboration with the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority [Zimra] is rolling out a tax education programme in Beitbridge targeting informal traders, crossborder traders and residents association representatives.

The programme is aimed at enlightening community members on the effects and implementation of the recently introduced domestic and customs taxes by the Ministry of Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion in this year’s annual budget.

VISET director Mr Samuel Wadzanai said it was critical for the general public, especially informal traders, cross-border traders and residents of Beitbridge to be aware of the new taxes to improve compliance.
He said they had roped in the youth, women, and disabled people, among other special interest groups, to get their feedback on the new tax regime.

Mr Wadzanai said they were complementing what the Government is doing in raising awareness about the new taxes.
“We have also invited the Beitbridge Municipality to enlighten the community on the budgeting processes and the rights and privileges of the residents for improved civic participation,” said Mr Wadzanai.

He said informal traders formed the majority of the residents in the border town and hence the need to educate them on tax-related issues.
Mr Wadzanai said Beitbridge was strategic in tax collection due to its location in the busiest regional and international corridor.
