PENCIL artist Tonia Gowoka believes that being cross-cultural has made her to adapt more and be open-minded about the work she produces.
She was born in Zimbabwe, but is of Malawian descent.
She specialises in portraits of both the human and animal form and teaches pencil art classes.
“Art is important because everything around us was once a sketch.
“From the homes we live in, the cars we drive, the phones we use. Art is therapy too.
“My favourite medium is charcoal. It’s such a ‘forgiving’ medium to use and I find myself being able to bring out my desired effects and textures pretty well,” she said.
Tonia draws inspiration from animal documentaries and Fraser Mackey influences most of her work.
“My biggest artistic influence is Fraser Mackay, I attended one of his art exhibitions when I was still in art school, and a massive wave of inspiration kicked in.
“I now enjoy being a wildlife artist too.
“Travelling, animal documentaries and food give me a lot of inspiration.
“After a lovely cup of tea in the morning or late at night when all is quiet, I’ve known myself to produce lovely pieces.
“Emotions are my biggest motivators. Happy or sad, emotions have a positive way of helping me to create different pieces.”
She added:
“For me, success as an artist is defined by having an impact on society, being an inspiration to my students, having a sense of ‘Yes I can!’ to every creative challenge I’m faced with.
“Art has helped me to be more careful, assertive and being able to trust the process.
“I use art as therapy, a bubble where I’m able to let go and fully express myself.
“I practice as much as I can, try out new techniques. With the new age of Tiktok, I get to watch other artists and learn from different creators from around the world.”
