An exquisite solo exhibition dubbed “Reflections” by upcoming female graphic designer Hannah Chikeya, which is running at Herald House is an insight into issues affecting the society.The exhibition opened on Wednesday afternoon and ends tomorrow.
Hannah, who is a student at the Chinhoyi University of Technology, is exhibiting about 35 pieces and said her theme is aligned to day-to-day life experiences.
“My theme refers to art as the mirror of society and is drawn from the things I see happening around me. That is where my inspiration comes from. I see things and explain them in images,” she said.
The 22-year-old used various techniques in her work and some of the pieces tackle child abuse, abortion, effects of deforestation, poaching and street life.
“I am a versatile artist although I specialise in graphic designing. In my work I used still-life drawing, print making and photography.”
Hannah is a final year student studying towards a Bachelor of Science, Honours degree in creative arts and design.
Speaking at the official launch, The Herald Assistant Business Editor Walter Muchinguri, who was guest of honour said Hannah’s work shows a lot of creativity.
“Art usually depicts the current or a particular scenario in view of a political, economic, social or geographical situation. Hannah has selected a range of artworks and the main thrust of her work is to find a way to awaken people who are sleep-walking in their lives by challenging them to stop and look into the mirror,” he said.
To show her versatility Hannah also did a good design of a proposed magazine called “ZimFashion”.
“I realised that in this era people are more into fashion yet local papers rarely focus on fashion trends. The magazine would give designers a good marketing platform and help people keep up to date with fashion trends,” she said.
